Mono Lake, east of the Sierra Nevada in California, is a stunning 66 square mile alkaline lake. The alkaline water precipitates carbonate, creating tufa - up to 30 feet high. Although barely noticeable from the highway above the lake, at shore level, they create a magical forest of rock. At sunrise, I had them to myself - a once in a lifetime experience.source:
